What is PIP and Why Do I Need It?

Posted By Uvalle Law Firm, PLLC

Personal injury protection (PIP) provides coverage regardless of who caused the accident. This means that a covered individual can receive medical payments coverage plus 80 percent of lost income and the cost of a caregiver even if they were at fault for the accident.

While PIP is beneficial for every person, it is most valuable for individuals who:

  • Carry passengers often. Why? Passengers can hold a driver responsible for their medical expenses if the driver is at fault for the accident.
  • Do not have top-tier health insurance plans. Why? Drivers who do not have great health insurance should obtain PIP in case they are involved in an accident that causes serious injury.

How Much Will PIP Insurance Cover?

According to Texas law, insurance companies must offer PIP with any liability automobile insurance policy. If a person does not want PIP, they must reject the offer in writing. Most PIP will cover up to $2,500.00 in medical bills, up to 80% of lost wages, and the costs of obtaining reasonable household services that cannot be performed due to injury.

However, it is important that people obtain the most coverage they can afford in case a vehicle accident occurs. In most cases, insurance companies will offer coverage up to $10,000.00 if requested.
