Why You Should See a Doctor Immediately After an Accident

Posted By Uvalle Law Firm, PLLC

A car accident at any speed has the potential to cause injury. Even a rear-end accident at 25 mph may still be enough to cause whiplash or other soft tissue injury. Still, many accident victims don’t seek medical attention after an accident because they don’t immediately feel hurt, because they don’t believe their injury is serious enough to see a doctor, or because they are afraid of the costs of treatment. Unfortunately, this can set the victim up for big problems down the road.

Here’s why you should see a doctor as soon as possible after being injured:

  • You may be injured and not know it. The adrenaline rush from a sudden accident may mask the immediate symptoms of an injury. You may not feel hurt for several days after an accident, by which time more damage will have had a chance to occur. You should get to a doctor as soon as possible to avoid potential future complications.
  • Any delay may be viewed negatively by the insurance company. If you don’t take prompt action and see a doctor, the insurance company may imply that your injuries really aren’t that serious. Furthermore, you won’t have a record of your injuries with which to prove them wrong!
  • Establishing a paper trail will support your injury claim. Having your injuries documented by a doctor can help you establish your need for time off from work, your need for future care, what care you have already had, when/where you received treatment, and more. This is all valuable information for establishing the value of your insurance claim and/or personal injury lawsuit.
